Dina Ruzha's "Letterforms" is an album that beautifully merges art and typography, showcasing the expressive power of calligraphy. Inspired by The London Design Festival, the album features works from talented calligraphers across Russia and Ukraine, with a special focus on Cyrillic calligraphy.
The album, which is part of Ruzha's graduation project, stands out for its unique approach to calligraphy. Ruzha believes in the emotion of calligraphy and its ability to convey a message even before the text is read. The album covers a wide range of calligraphy styles, from classical to experimental, and uses non-traditional instruments and materials.
Ruzha's design process involved extensive work on lettering and layout, using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. The album measures 200 mm in width and height, and is the first Russian album to feature contemporary calligraphy and lettering works of Slavic calligraphers. The project started in March 2017 in New York City and was completed in June 2017 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The selection of calligraphy works was a major challenge in the design process. Ruzha sought to maintain a consistent style and taste across the album, and spent considerable time communicating with potential contributors. She expresses her gratitude to her calligraphy friends who helped to collect the material.
"Letterforms" was awarded Silver in A' Print and Published Media Design Award in 2018, a testament to Ruzha's creativity and innovation. The award recognizes top-of-the-line designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
The album is a significant contribution to the field of typography and design, and a celebration of the beauty and expressiveness of calligraphy.
